One of the major components to creating livable communities exists in a planning technique called transit oriented development. Transit oriented development is an intentional mixing of both transportation and land use planning techniques, to create communities that are efficient, safe and convenient to travel on foot, by bicycle, transit or car. Anchorage Metropolitan Area Transportation Solutions (AMATS) and the Municipality of Anchorage have begun work on the Spenard Corridor Plan (SCP). This plan will be Anchorage’s first transit oriented development plan and will take a comprehensive look at the Spenard corridor (Hillcrest Drive to International) to determine opportunities for investment in housing, transportation networks, business growth, community services and more.
The planning process for the SCP encompasses over a year of public involvement efforts and community engagement in the Spenard area. With your help, we hope to preserve this historically funky neighborhood while devising a community driven transit oriented development plan that builds on Spenard’s unique qualities.
